The fixed income business helps clients with their needs in markets including commodities, credit, foreign exchange, rates, and other spread products.Our clients include the world’s leading institutional investors and high net worth individuals and we provide these clients with value-added, independent, insightful and actionable investment advice.About Mumbai Center of Excellence (COE), Citi ResearchThe Mumbai Center of Excellence (COE), Citi Research is a full research office working with Equities Research, Equity Quant Research and Strategy, Economics Research, Commodities Research, and Rates Research. It also handles various critical functions such as Research Distribution, Global Data Services, Modeling and Risk Management.The Associate / Analyst group in Mumbai COE is organized into sector Pods namely Financials, TMT, Energy / Utilities, Consumer & HealthCare, Industrials, Metals & Mining, Quants and Economics. These Pods are led by Pod Heads; having team management and coverage responsibilities. These sector pods are planned to be synced in with the new Global Super Sector structure outlined above. Role and ResponsibilitiesThe COE Super Sector Pod Head will be responsible for managing the Mumbai Commodities Super Sector Pod comprising dedicated staff (working on a 1:1 role) and non-dedicated staff (working on multiple projects with multiple onshore strategists). The Pod Head will work closely with Global Super Sector Head and will be responsible for end to end project management and team management. The role doesn’t entail lead author role except under exceptional circumstances.The key responsibilities associated with this role are the following:Thought Leadership / Sector ThematicThe Pod Head is expected to be a thought leader on products, client requests and new initiatives. The Pod Head is expected to be on top of the latest sector news and insights.Considering that the non-dedicated staff will have varied skillsets (data analytics, research preparation, coverage support), the Pod Head is expected to generate ideas and drive differentiated products utilizing the overall Pod skillsets.Driving cross super-sector products in collaboration with Global Super Sector Pod Head, Coordinators and Sector colleagues.Support the team create new client products and take ownership of running them routinely.Work with Global Super Sector Pod Head to develop sector thematics and marketing presentations.Collaborating with fellow colleagues covering various commodities across geographies.Team LeadershipDelivery Lead: Assume responsibility of deliverables sent from the Commodities Super Sector Pod; both from Dedicated staff as well as non-dedicated staff. Since the dedicated model is already established, Super Sector Pod Head will primarily be involved in working with the non-dedicated staff to execute short to medium term projects from multiple onshore strategists across regions. Wherever required, the individual will also have to work alongside non-dedicated staff for efficient delivery on projects while meeting highest quality standards. In many cases, given the nature of work, it is not possible to define quantitative metrics and hence it is important to develop a culture of ‘client delight’ by constantly pushing for excellence in service delivery.Hiring, Training and Mentorship Responsibilities: The Pod Head will be hands-on in the hiring process and be required to recruit high quality Associates for new and replacement hires. Activities include finalizing job specifications in consultation with Global Super Sector Head and conducting preliminary interviews.The COE Super Sector Pod Head will be actively involved in ‘Training Needs Identification’ and will pursue/monitor training goals for Pod staff. On the job training and offhand coaching is widely encouraged and the Pod Head will be required to proactively work towards Pod staff’s development needs.Performance Management: The Pod Head will interact on a continuous basis with onshore strategists to seek feedback on staff. The Head will be required to identify low performing staff on an ongoing basis and work with them as well as onshore Strategists to achieve desired performance standards. The Pod Head will be responsible for deciding year end performance rating for staff within the bell curve constraint.The Pod Head should help create an environment which is conducive to employee growth and development; eventually leading to attrition levels less than industry average. The Pod Head should tightly control the post attrition scenarios by managing expectations of onshore Strategists, proactive hiring and transitioning the role to the new Pod staff.Knowledge ManagementPod Head will be responsible for institutionalizing the knowledge within the Pod. This involves documentation, organization, access and training of Pod Knowledge across staff and may include differentiated models and unique modeling techniques, database files with in-built functionalities, proprietary data management, process manuals and best practices (on working with a specific strategist, writing styles, on deliverables etc.).Pod Head to suggest ideas to better manage knowledge and share with other teams for wider adoption.Stakeholder ManagementThe Pod Head will partner with Global Super Sector Head and work alongside Strategists, Associates & other Team Leads. Should display strong interpersonal & problem solving skills.The COE Super Sector Pod Head will locally report to Head – Associate and Analyst Group and matrix report to the Global Super Sector Pod Head and be actively involved in all management issues concerning the Industrial Tech and Mobility Pod.Lead Author/ Client CoverageNo except under exceptional circumstances.EducationMBA from a premier academic institution and/or Bachelors/ Master’s degree in economics/mining/petrochemical from a premier academic institution. CFA Certification is recommended.Experience8 years (min) of commodities research (iron ore, coal, aluminum, copper, nickel, zinc, precious metals etc.) experience with Research firms or Consulting firms or Commodities Research experience with Corporates. Experience in managing research projects (commodity coverage, client requests, modeling) involving multiple stakeholders across geographies.Team management experience of more than 3 years.Onshore experience; having worked with Research colleagues across the globe is a plus.Knowledge/experience in data analytics (descriptive, predictive and prescriptive data analytics) is preferred.Exposure to programming (Python, R) is desired.Mining and Steel industry knowledge is preferred.SkillsPrior demonstrated experience of managing large diversified teams operating in an offshore/global environment.Advanced Research skills involving data management and analysis, modeling, and financial report writing.Prior experience in covering commodities through active participation in framing the investment case.Prior exposure to client facing scenarios (internal clients – Spec. sales, traders; and external clients – portfolio managers, buy-side associates) such as presentation over morning call, interaction with clients over in-person meetings, phone calls, conferences etc.Excellent knowledge about the one or few of the commodities sectors - iron ore, coal, aluminum, copper, nickel, zinc, precious metals. Should be well versed with developments in the space and be able to provide views.
